York July 1 - July 2, 2001

7-1-01, Sunday: Left Heacham and drove up to Whitby. It was a 190-mile drive through beautiful rolling countryside - lush greens fields, graced with a few great English Oaks.

We took a little side trip to an old mill that turned out to be more of an animal farm than an historic site. Spent an enjoyable hour admiring chickens, ducks, and more exotic birds before continuing on our way.

We went through Scarborough, a fairly large city located on the eastern, central coast of England. Not much of a chance to stop but good to note for future visits.

We went on up to Whitby, about 20 miles to the north.

We found our B & B, the Grantly House without much trouble. There were couple of churches within a stones throw from the B & B - one had great yellow doors and beautifully carved statuary and lentils. The remains of Whitby Abbey sit on a hill above the harbor.

7-2-01, Monday: Spent the day walking around Whitby. We walked down to the harbor took a few boat and harbor shots.

We looked at most of the little shops in town then did the "Abbey Step Climb". It is 168 steps to the top. We walked around the perimeter of the abbey then went back down into town for a little lunch at the Abbey Steps Café.

We went back to the B & B for an afternoon rest and a great dinner. Then it was off for another walk to photograph the colorful little changing huts along the beach, continuing on the cliff walk for another mile or so, then returning to Witby for sunset. We admired the ever changing view until after the sun dipped below the horizon and the light came on along the promenade.

7-3-01, Tuesday: Our drive today from Whitby to Keswick was just fabulous. There was so much green and the fields with rock barns and rock houses and rock fences were everywhere. We stopped at several pullout parking spots along the highway. We took the A66 most of the way.
